Completed Edits

I really like the angle of this photo and how the audience has a clear view of 'Alice' staring shocked at  the clock. But by using this angle we could also get a lot of the tea party scene included, this combined with the clock very much reinforces the themes of Wonderland, which is very helpful for this photo as the signature blue dress is not the focus. This closer shot also allows for the rings on 'Alice's' fingers to be much more noticeable as opposed to my other body shots. The colours in this photo make for a very interesting pastel palette that create a visually appeasing image, these colours also reflect the vintage style well. For the Viber logo and slogan I decided to keep in tune with the pale colours and so used the same baby pink as featured in the straw stripes, the dusky lilac of the slogan came from one of the purple glasses. This image features the rule of thirds as the viewer's eye is directed across the whole picture with there being no center focus. In terms of editing I used a filter tool to lighten the photo in order to not make the lighting used in the taking of the photo not look as artificial. The filter provides the idea that it is lit naturally by the sun. The filter also makes the photo appear a lo softer and this adds to the dreamy quality of 'Wonderland'.

This image gives off the impression of being very warm due to the colours and the way that the light has caught them. I controlled the contrast on this photo in order to make the colours a lot deeper and richer. This can easily be seen in the model's 'Mad Hatter' clothes, i.e. the red hat. I love the idea of this photo as it clearly portrays the idea and scene of the Mad Hatter's tea party turning to disarray, the glasses and such on the table have been knocked over and the Mad Hatter herself is throwing the roses into the air and watching them fall back with glee. Her mouth turned up into a small smile which gives the idea that she's trying to restrain herself but it isn't working. Her expression combined with the scene really highlights what Wonderland is all about. The window showcases a gorgeous winter scene that isolates the tea party and gives the impression that there isn't another home for miles around. The red logo and slogan are soft and are reminiscent of Christmas, the colour was taken from the hat on the model. With the model's arms being open wide and her palms facing the camera it offers a welcoming gesture for the viewer, as though the Mad Hatter wants them to see the mess she is making and isn't scared but at the same time her downward cast face gives the impression that she either doesn't know the audience is there or that she simply doesn't care.

I really like this photo as I feel the simplicity really highlights the smaller detail in the White Queen's dress and gives the photo an air of elegance to match the Queen's graceful stance. I removed the blue screen background in order to replace it with a simple red and green tartan pattern. I chose this as I felt the  pattern was very much a Winter-y image. The image is warm and inviting which the viewer will find appealing. The use of the rule of thirds means that the lines of tartan gently guides the viewer's eye across the title, slogan and to the Queen who even appears to be reading the slogan herself. I really enjoy how the Queen's hair looks immaculate and dress wrinkle free in a true royal fashion, the lush white blanket she is just barely sweeping her fingers across also adds to the warm image of Christmas. The use of lines also feature in this photo are a great way to lead the viewer's eye across the text and to the model. Overall these create a very visually appeasing image that fits the brief perfectly and the reader of 'Vibe' would enjoy.
I love the use of the rule of thirds in this image and how the photo represents the winter season. The photo makes the viewer want to shiver as they look at it but the scene itself is beautiful, this is highlighted with he use of colour. The viewer's eye is led across the whole image taking in every detail of the model and the scenery. Again the use of the dog adds a softer element to the image. With Alice being in the foreground of the picture this image has a lot of depth that is very visually appeasing. I love how vibrant the dress is in the photo and makes the viewer's eye be drawn to it immediately.

I love this image as it clearly portrays the White Queen and gives a sense of what her character is like. The way she is walking through the snow looks here to be smooth and graceful just like a Queen when really any one else that would be walking across the scene would be staggering and struggling. The fact that she has left no marks in the snow gives the illusion that her flowing dress train has swept her footsteps away as she has left them. The layout of this photo is one of my favourites as the viewer's eye is taken across the logo, over the model and finally to the slogan on the right side. The whole photo is fluid and easy to look at, the expanse of white is smooth and a great contrast to the blue-y green colours of the trees. I also really like how lines are used in this photo, they aren't easy or plain to see, instead they are embedded within the trees and the viewer is unconsciously made to rake their eyes up and down the photo following the paths of the trees whilst also the White Queen. The way that the edges are blurred out also softens the photo and ensures that the model is the center focus in her luxurious vintage dress.

10 Photos

I like this photo as it was not posed and instead taken as the model was coming down from another less successful pose stood on a chair. The model has her eyes downcast in an endearing motion and is very relaxed in the image, I really like the positioning of her hand on the window pane and the way her hair falls on her shoulder in a graceful motion. I also like the slight tilt of the angle and the way that colours are reflected in the photo. It is also a great way to showcase the choker the model is wearing. I used TV mode in order to capture a clear image whilst not using a tripod.
I love how cleverly posed this photo is, with the use of the model looking at her own reflection we are able to see different angles of Alice without it being an eyesore. This interesting position cleverly uses the rule of thirds in a fun and imaginative way. I also really enjoy the use of the light in this image as the sun from the window is reflecting off of the window and lighting across Alice's reflected face. Again the choker is being featured in this image as the model looks as though she is adjusting it. However, this image does have a downfall which is the fact it is not in focus enough, if the photo was more focused I may have been more inclined to choose it as one of my final five to edit.
I really enjoy the pose and use of the dog in this image, the use of the bench is very rural and quirky whilst the dog adds a softer element, both of these things I feel really reflect Alice's personality. Her faint smile as she plays with the dog and how the dog isn't afraid to come near her suggest that she is a person to be trusted that the viewer will pick up on. These are very endearing qualities that create an appeasing image. However, the background is not the right season for the image purpose and so I have changed this in editing. For this image I used macro mode in order to capture the model clearly and allow the light to shine through where as the background was left blurred.
I love how the model's eyes are looking straight into the camera lens for this photo and it appears as though she is smirking at the viewer. this engages the viewer and almost dares them to look away, which they won't. I think this differentiates the two characters of Alice and the Mad Hatter from each other as before we saw the soft, friendly playfulness of a young girl and now we can see the more challenging, stronger character of the Mad Hatter. I like the background, it looks very formal and posh where as the Mad Hatter isn't treating it as such, instead balancing a tea cup off her finger. I also really enjoy her relaxed, lean back stance that shows off how at home she feels in the image.
I took this photo using sports mode in order to capture the falling roses that the Mad Hatter threw into the air. I like the way hat you can clearly see the flower heads but I do not like how they cover the model's face. I will use a photo similar to this but one where the roses are not covering the face of the model as I feel this takes away from the image.

This photo is one of my favourites as it is a close up of the model's face, her deep lipstick has caught the light perfectly and the light also shines prettily on the rest of her face. The 'White Queen' is staring dead on into the camera and therefore at the viewer this is very captivating and makes the viewer not want to look away from the photo. As well as this, the model is absentmindedly playing with the vintage pearl necklace and thus drawing the viewers attention to what is being sold. I also like the way that the model is not in the center of this photo, it creates a visually appeasing structure.

I took this photo using sports mode, it was one of many but this one I feel this one worked well as you can see the movements taking place. The model is looking down at her own steps which encourages the viewer to do the same. Again her hair is swept artfully to one side so that we have a clear view of her face on profile. The light coming into this photo reflects nicely on the model and the dress. the way it is draped from her hands is smooth and shows of the vinatge wedding dress itself.
Another White Queen image that I really like as it is taken from a low angle, pointing up. The model looks as though she is staring at something above the corner and the way she is smiling happily makes the viewer want to know what she is looking at. I like the way she is positioned as the one shoulder in the front and her almost looking over it adds depth to the image. The lighting is also very nice in this photo and casts a visually appeasing shadow onto the model's face.
This photo is meant to be very natural, the girl is not in any character instead she is simply reading a fairy tale book in her cosy Christmas themed clothes. I like this photo as the picture really does give the impression that the girl is lost in the fairy tale world and smiling without even realizing it. The idea for these photos was to set up the story of why the photos happened. The girl falls asleep reading a fairy tale book and then dreams of what it would be like to be the characters. The dog is also in the photo and adds a endearing factor to the photo which would appeal to animal lovers.
This photo is in the same context as the above but using a completely different angle which makes the viewer feel as though they are looking over the model's shoulder as she is reading. We can clearly see her Christmas jumper and socks and also get an idea for just how absorbed in the story she is. The rule of thirds is used as there is no exact center point of the photo and the viewer is encouraged to scan the whole photo, taking in every detail.

Before and After editing

Below are my five favourite pictures which I chose to edit, I have included the photo before having been edited and then the finished result so that I can explain fully the changes I made in order to enhance the photographs. All of these edits were done through the use of photoshop.

This photo is the first I chose to edit and is also the most basic. The first change I made was to crop the image, specifically the left side, by doing this I cut out the empty seat next to Alice and also it enhances the use of the rule of thirds by setting the models face even further from the center. I simply used the brightness tool in order to lighten the photograph and give it a more picture perfect quality. For the logo, 'Viber' and the slogan I chose to use colours taken directly from the photographer using the colour dropper tool, the dusky pink of the logo was taken from the pink stripes of the straws in the image and the lilac of the slogan was taken from the purpler glass. I also put a stroke on the slogan in order to ensure that it stands out, I used a slightly deeper pink for this in order to keep the colour pallet of the image the same. As well as these changes I used the spot healing tool  on the model's face and arms to give of a smoother image, but the effects of this were small.

This photo was harder to edit than the first as the garden scene in the unedited image's window was very much taking away from the winter Wonderland theme. I knew this would have to be changed immediately, so using layers I created a background layer of a beautiful winter scenery consisting of snowy trees. Then locking this layer and creating another featuring my unedited image allowed for me to use the magic eraser tool to remove the unwanted wall outside of the window. In order to do this with concise lines and not erase any of the curtians or window panes I used the shape tool to draw boxes that stopped me from cutting outside the lines of my box. Once I used this method as much as I could with great results I had to zoom in on the image and use a very small size eraser to remove the finer little lines next to the window panes and the curtains. As I was erasing parts of the photo on this layer, the background snow scenery was showing in the gaps, creating the illusion that the home actually overlooks the forest. After this was completed I decided to use the vibrancy tool in order to enhance the picture, this can be seen primarily in the model's red hat, the rest of her clothes and also the wallpaper. Then I also used the brightness tool in order to make the image look cleaner and fresher than the original as it did not make sense for the window scene to be so light in comparison to the darker inside of the home. Using the colour dropper tool I took the soft red colour for the logo and slogan from the Mad Hatter's hat.

This photo used a lot of editing. Having taken the original in my own back garden the scenery was definitely not ideal for the intended purpose as it looked much more of an autumn time than winter. So like the image before I chose to edit in a new background. I found the perfect winter backdrop which features a frozen over lake, benches and trees covered in snow as well as footsteps in the otherwise unmarked snow. Using this as my locked background layer I made a new layer to insert the original image, I then used the background eraser tool to remover everything but Alice, the dog and the bench they are sat on. This was a very tricky process which I eventually had to zoom a lot in on to use a small eraser to remove the fine lines. I turned the the cut out image slightly clockwise, moved it into the corner and cut off a small portion of the bottom. After doing this I then used the smudge tool to blend the dog in with the photo as before his lines were too harsh. For the logo 'Viber' and its slogan I used a soft blue colour in order to highlight Alice's dress and reflect the cold winter atmosphere in the image.

Like the image above I used a lot of editing on this image, locking the background image of yet another outside winter tree scene I used my unedited image in another layer. The White Queen was a lot easier to cut out as I had taken the image on a blue backdrop in the studio. As she was so easy to cut out it was simple to place her on the background layer, I made the model a lot smaller and placed her on the image so that it looked as though she was walking across the scene. In order to make her look less out of place and not as though she had just been plonked on the background I used the burn tool giver her a small shadow behind her. I also used the smudge tool on her lower back in order to achieve a similar effect. After this I used the blur tool on the edges of the background to give the photo more of a frame and make the model the focus. I put the 'Viber' logo and slogan in white in order to match the White Queen and also so as not too take away too much attention from the photo itself, a bright colour may have looked ostentatious and thrown off the dynamics of the photo.

This image like the one above was easy to cut out as it was on a blue backdrop, then instead of using another elaborate snow scene I decided to use a simple tartan print which I feel is very fitting for the season. I did use the spot healing tool to smooth the model's hands, face and hair. Then I used the brightness tool to lighten the image and give it a more dream like quality. Again I used the colour dropper tool for the logo and slogan, I took the pale grey colours from the faded areas in the tartan backdrop.

Shooting Schedule

A shooting schedule is necessary to keep track of the process of our photo shoot to ensure we do not get behind schedule and we can keep all the photos in order. By shooting the characters at different times we can ensure each costume has enough time to be showcased.

The 'Alice' Images- The Alice images will be taken first as they are the center and most important to the Wonderland theme. They will be shot in the home location for around two hours including hair and make up. We estimate this will between the 11 AM and 1PM. This includes the few photos that we took of Alice in the homes back garden. At this time we shall have a break before shooting the next character in the home location.

The 'Mad Hatter' Images-  Following the break after the Alice images our model shall change into her second costume, then these photos will also be taken inside the home location using similar settings. We estimate the Mad Hatter images to take only an hour.

The 'Christmas Reading' Images- We only estimate to have around half an hour to shoot the cosy, Christmas reading images. These photos are much more simple than the previous in terms of setting, costume and poses. We only want photos of the Model reading a old fashion fairy tale book and then to fall asleep reading so her elaborate dream may begin.

The home images will all be taken in just one day so timing is tight, due to the fact that the home setting is scarcely available. The next day we shall use the studio in college.

The 'White Queen' Images- These images shall be taken in the studio as this particular character calls for a much more elaborate winter background that we could not create at the time of the shoot. This shoot will take half an hour to pick up the costume pieces from the charity shop and then we have a further two hours to actually work in the studio.

Contingency Plan

This contingency plan will ensure that our photo shoot is completed by the deadline no matter what. It is important we make a contingency plan so as to be prepared for any incidents that may occur in the production of the shoot and keep things moving fluidly. Below are some of the adjustments that would be made under different circumstances.

  • If the home location that we secured is unavailable when he need it or changed drastically from when we originally checked it then we shall have to take most of the photos in the studio in front of the blue screen so that we can photo shop a much more fitting scenery into place.
  • If any equipment is faulty, broken or unavailable when we are taking our photos we will have to take photos using our own cameras and much less professional lighting until we can secure working equipment to take better quality photos.
  • If any of the clothes we have requested and put aside to use from the local charity shop (Age UK) are unavailable, dirtied or ill fitting then we will have to look through our own wardrobe selection for appropriate pieces or clean any dirty clothes borrowed in order to make them more acceptable for the brief.
  • If the photos that we have taken in any of the locations are not to a high quality we will have to do a re-shoot and take more in order to get the perfect images.
  • If we run out of time to shoot whether it be with the equipment, model or clothing we will arrange extra days within the deadline to get finished otherwise we will have to work the best with the images we have so far gotten.

Applegarth Building

In this mini assignment, the stairs in the applegarth building proved to be a favourite feature to photograph. It is easy to see why as the different shapes, angles and textures of the stairs proved to make for extremely interesting photographs. The far top photo is a profile shot of the main stairs in the building, I took this particular image to mostly showcase an interesting angle and picture the steps make when on a slant. I am not overly fond of the particular image as some aspects are dull but the image works for the purpose (angle) I wanted. However, the left photo and the one directly above this text are images taken of the same staircase just from different viewpoints. I love these images as they really showcase the structure of the stairs and how they form. On the left we can clearly see how the steps wind round in a spiral, the viewer's eye immediately follows the path and is left to question where the steps go next as the image is cut off before reaching the top. The lines are very interesting as there is straight vertical and horizontal lines, whilst also have curved lines.I also really like the depth that this image has. In the foreground we can see a railing that dominates the bottom, right corner and in the background we can see the same railing traveling up the paths of the staircase, giving the image a quality 3D form. The right image is a aerial shot of the stairs in which we have a clear view of the steps from above. In this image the curved structure is highlighted once more in another appealing visual.

I really love this image as it presents lighting in a perfect example. The way that the light from outside casts the window panes in shadows creates a very interesting image. The lines are very prominent due to the shade they have been cast in, they create a heavy force bringing the viewer's eye to the bottom. Whilst the sunny background is much lighter and freeing for the eye, it is bound by the harsh lines of the windowpanes.

This photo is taken from a perspective view from a window in the applegarth building. I like this photo as the top features the clear blue sky which melts into the lush greenery but then the image suddenly gets very heavy as the harsh buildings bring the viewers eye down as it creates the strong and heavy presence. I also really like the lines created by the tiles on top of the buildings and how they seem to lead the viewer's eye towards the brighter top of the image.

This photo was taken from a low angle that I think creates a clever contrast between the modern man made building and the thin tree standing proudly beside it. Lines are a heavy feature in this image also, this coupled with the use of rule of thirds create an appealing image with plenty of detail to keep the photo interesting.

This photo incorporates the rule of thirds very well. Take from a high angle focusing downwards, I manged to capture a very interesting view of the balcony and windows on a slanted angle. The white spotlights take dominance in the left hand side of the photo and they also create a interesting line due to the repetitive position they hang in. The large, black window panes also create vertical lines leading to the top of the photo, this creates a contrast between the ore subtle lines in the flooring. Both of these sets of lines meet in the top right corner creating another position of the rule of thirds going on in this photograph. I am pleased with this particular photo as I had not realized these interesting effects were going on before I took the picture.

This photo I took in order to caption the texture of the carpet, which I feel has worked well. The contrast between the textured carpet and the smooth metal surface adjacent to it is very detailed and the viewer can imagine perfectly how both of these surfaces would feel to the touch.

I took this photo from a low angle as I felt the hanging lamp shades had potential to create an interesting viewpoint. I am pleased with the results and the fact that this image uses the rule of thirds, as there is no direct center focus in the image. The positioning and size of the different lamp shades is random and create an interesting, visually appeasing affect. The paths of which the lamp shades hang down are also cleverly used and they highlight the depth of this photograph. The shadowing on the inside of the lamp shades and in the background were unintentionally captured, but I am glad they are present as they enhance the photo.

I took this photo as I personally felt it would create an interesting image with the use of the different size and colour of yarns. The lines stretch from left to right of the photo, they seemingly do no stop and so this creates a pleasing illusion to the viewer, they are led back and forth across the image having time to absorb all of the finer details.

Silhouette Photography

In order to capture the shadows on the face in this photo we used low key lighting coming from the bottom of the image. This lit up the bottom of the face whilst casting the rest in shadow. The shadow creates a dark and mysterious quality to the photo that is highlighted with the eyes looking away from the camera. What I really like about this photo is how the eyelashes shadow over the eyelids and give an up-lit quality that sculptures the face. It clearly defines the different curves and shapes in the human face for example the cheeks are lit up towards the bottom and darkened where its round most rounded. The hair surrounding the face gradually gets darker until its seeping into the equally as dark background.

These two photos were taken using TV (top) and auto (bottom) modes respectively. The former captured an image which depicts the girl first launching up to jump. While the girls stance is not very interesting in terms of capturing movement, the shadow in the window does show a lot more. The legs of the shadow are specifically angled in a way that shows how the body has moved with the jump at a more clear angle. The legs appear in the reflection much more relaxed as opposed to looking at them straight on. However, the latter does not display a reflection but I think is still as effective in capturing movement as the first. The movement in this particular image can most clearly be found in the girl's hair which flails upwards as she falls. The same can be seen in the dress and piece of paper being clutched in the hand. These more physical aspects capture the movement in a way which is much different to the first, in my opinion. Both are just as effective as each other but I personally favour the former photo as it is more unusual.

I used manual mode for this photo and it -like the above- manages to capture the wispy pieces of hair that fan across the girl's face. There is also a clear shadow in the reflection but it does not portray an interesting angle as the photo using TV mode did. Although I do think that the use of the open arms being pushed back by the up rush of wind is also captured well in the image. While the legs are not (for obvious reasons) completely straight they do help to create some extra lines in the image, which compliment the two pillars of the alcove.

This photo is almost a reversal of the first image I analysed. Instead of a light shining from beneath the girl's face, the light source is coming from behind. This casts the body in darkness, especially the face area. It can clearly be seen in the hair and shoulders how the body gets brighter as is seeps into the background.
These two photos were taken in order to show how shadows can be captured by camera.
