Fashion Photography
Helmut Newton- |
I love the whole scene of the above photo. By use of the still body on the left side of the model, which the viewer will automatically see first, immediately we are given the impression of a dangerous style which the viewer is perhaps not meant to have seen. With this sense of danger that what you are seeing is not meant for your eyes, the viewer will be drawn in further to the idea of mystery that the photo portrays. The model's facial expression is coolly indifferent and looking above the camera lens into, what is to the viewer, the unknown. As well as this the provocative stance of the woman, with her hands behind her back as if she is an innocent and almost shy are a stark contrast to the scene behind her and her facial expression. Being scantily clad like she is should also make the woman appear vulnerable but in this case the viewer is alluded to the fact that she knows exactly whats gone on and and what she is doing. Despite her shoulders being drawn forward, her neck is straight and elongated to present the elegance of an intelligent and strong woman. The uses of black and white in this image is very fitful as we can see in plain black and white what has gone on. A man is lying presumably dead and the model is not trying to hide this fact, she knows that we as the viewer know the body is there. The dark also reinforces the mystery of the situation, 'whats happened exactly?'. The setting as well looks to be almost industrial and deserted this gives of the impression that perhaps nobody is around to see or even put a stop to what has happened in the photo.

I love the way that the model in this photo is cast off to the right hand side which is cleverly done as an audience's eye immediately travels from a top left corner downwards. I also think that the model looks as though she is uncomfortable in the clearly prestigious atmosphere surrounding her. Her hat and coat seem to drown her but she is still holding herself up ram rod straight and looking straight ahead with albeit sad eyes. The woman also seems very lonely despite the mad in the background we are given the illusion she isn't allowed to talk to the man and this may perhaps be a social issue. The use of lines in the background also emphasize the grandeur of the scene. The model is also holding a dog that is mostly soft fur and this accentuates the tall gracefulness of the model, especially her long neck that is highlighted with her hair pulled up into the curved hat. |

Types of Photography in the Media
Journalism:
I found this photograph on a news article about the British
Journalism 2012 awards. (http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/british-journalism-awards-2012-showcase-photo-journalist-year-finalists)
What I like about this photo is how the aggressor seems
un-phased by the picture being taken when he is so clearly attacking the men on
the ground. The sign ‘Mental Hospital’ clearly shows the viewer that these men
are being tortured by means of help and it makes the viewer question if they
have been forced into the hospital.
- This photograph could be used in text books about history and how some people were treated like second class citizens.
- It could also be used in appeal advertisements aimed to shock people into helping the cause.
Fashion:
I found this photo on a ‘Daily Inspiration’ website which
upon investigation seems to simply display creative photos of just about
anything in order to inspire viewers.
What I like about this photo is that the model is being
consumed by the plain balls in order to try and convey that she is perhaps
plain in order to garner all attention to her bag and shoes. I think this is a
good marketing device as it ensures all attention goes to the product and is
immediately caught there.
- This photo could be used in fashion advertisements both on screen and print.
- It could also be used on a fashion blog.
Wildlife:
I found this photo on a geographic website, in an article
for 2010 wildlife photographer of the year. (http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/view-image.htm?gid=7716)
I love the angle this photo was taken at and I think it was
done very cleverly. Turtles are something that we as humans see as being very
small and vulnerable creatures. But this photo shows the turtle to be a large,
mighty creature and this was done by use of angle and also the lighting shining
behind the animals head.
- This could be used on an advertisement appeal advert collecting donations for wildlife animals.
- Or it could be placed in a text book
Sport:
This photo was found on an article proclaiming the pros of
sports photography. (http://www.ephotozine.com/article/sports-photography-is-the-goal-10088)
I like that this photo makes the viewer want to know more
about what happened for the crowd to react like this to the player. I also love
the emotions of pure joy and elation which are featured. The players stance,
with his arms spread wide in a beholding gesture clearly show that he is quite
proud and happy to bask in the awaiting glory. The emotions in the photo were
taken in a fantastic moment that makes the viewer feel good on their behalf.
- This photo could be found in a sports article.
- It could also be used to advertise brands which make sport equipment, i.e. Umbro (which is pictured in the photo)
Landscape:
This photo was found on an online gallery of a
photographer’s (Trevor Brown) work. (http://www.trevorbrownphoto.co.uk/)
I love the way that the lighting was captured in this photo
as it looks as if the small town is being blessed by a other worldly presence.
The way that the colour has been darkened and features a lot of blue guides the
eye to look at the lighter part which features the tThis could be used in a travel brochure.
- This could be used in a travel brochure.
- Also could be used at an airport or train station to advertise destinations.
Advertising:
I like the use of the black background in this photo as it
really makes the colour of the product pop and standout. Also the use of the
fruits and flowers gives the viewer an idea of exactly what this product is
advertising. It gives us an idea of what fragrances are involved in order to
intrigue as opposed to hazarding wild guesses and subsequently putting us off
the product.
- This could be used in print ads in magazines.
- It also could be used on television and billboard, leaflets etc.
